What does PowerSource TOM do?

The PowerSource Transportation Optimization Module (TOM) allows for enhanced functionality of the 2012 Fisker Karma. The added features will consist of additional driving modes that will include the following:

EV Mode: This mode allows 2012 Fisker Karma owners to sustain state of charge (45 miles and below) at any point during their drive. Think of this mode as the current Sport mode at 26/27 miles with the ability to hold all the way up to 45 ideal miles.

ER Mode: This mode allows 2012 Fisker Karma owners to rebuild miles at any state of charge up to 45 miles. For example, if the owner has 10 ideal miles the PowerSource TOM unit will allow them to rebuild the pack over their drive to a maximum of 45 miles. This mode also allows the 2012 Fisker Karma to stationary charge at up to 11kW. For example, if you are running an errand, you can leave the car (outside), lock the vehicle, and then gain miles by leaving the vehicle on.

How does PowerSource TOM work?

The PowerSource TOM unit is a modular hardware solution that adds functionality to the 2012 Karma. The unit is plug and play and does not modify any of the existing software or hardware on the vehicle.

How is PowerSource TOM tested?

PowerSource uses a two-stage validation process. The first stage is an automated test process known as processor-in-the-loop (PIL). During this stage, real world vehicle test data is fed into PowerSource TOM and its output is validated and a model is created. The second stage process is on-road testing using our fleet of 2012 Fisker Karmas. Each PowerSource TOM goes through our automated testing process before installation.

How is PowerSource TOM installed?

There are three ways PowerSource TOM can be installed:

White Glove Installation: PowerSource will send an engineer to you and install the unit professionally based on your schedule and location. This service is included for vehicles located in the following counties in California: Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Professional Installation: PowerSource will coordinate with a local vehicle repair shop in your area (depending on geographic location) to deliver the parts and support.

Self Installation: If the owner is so inclined, PowerSource will deliver the self installation kit (additional cost) and PowerSource TOM to a technically apt owner. It is important to follow the instructions closely and carefully to ensure that PowerSource TOM is installed properly.

Will PowerSource TOM void my warranty?

It is illegal for the OEM/dealer to deny your warranty because of an aftermarket part. In order for a dealer and/or manufacturer to deny a warranty on a claimed part, the burden of proof falls on the manufacturer/dealer to prove that the aftermarket part caused a failure to the warranted part. It is similar to installing an aftermarket car alarm system which doesn't void vehicle warranty.

PowerSource TOM operates within the same boundary conditions that is currently built into the 2012 vehicle. The operational specifications of the 2012 Fisker Karma do not change by using the PowerSource TOM unit. We have designed PowerSource TOM for modularity and compatibility.

With all this being said, we recommend having the PowerSource TOM unit installed by a preferred installer, unless you have some basic knowledge of working on vehicles.

What are the benefits of PowerSource TOM?

PowerSource TOM gives an owner the ability to save more EV miles for later use in their trip rather than the current 26/27 mile limitation of the vehicle today. PowerSource TOM also provides the owner the ability to tap into the full performance of the 2012 Fisker Karma through out their whole drive due to the higher bus voltage of the battery. With PowerSource TOM, 2012 Fisker Karma owners gain the ability to rebuild their pack to 45 ideal miles while driving or sitting stationary.

What other features do you have in the works?

If you have visited our YouTube channel, you have seen some of the features we are working on including charge light indicator via the rear light pack (reverse and rear fogs) and fan speed control via steering wheel switches. We also have several other features (i.e. better use for the solar panel, additional charging options etc) in the works but all will use the PowerSource TOM unit as the building block. Stay tuned to our mailing list or website to find out about how we are enhancing the 2012 Fisker Karma.

How much does PowerSource TOM cost?

The cost for PowerSource TOM as of January 1st, 2016 is $2995 + installation.

Why didn't Fisker Automotive implement this feature when they launched the model year 2012 Fisker Karma?

The now defunct Fisker Automotive implemented some of the charging features on the roadshow cars, but later removed it due to a supplier issue. Many other brands have the charge on the fly feature such as the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid.

Can I move my PowerSource TOM from one 2012 Fisker Karma to the next?

No, unfortunately PowerSource TOM is coded to the car. If you change 2012 Fisker Karmas, please contact us and we will swap out your PowerSource TOM unit for a very reasonable cost.
